On Wednesday, November 20th, President-elect Donald Trump announced the nomination of Pete Hoekstra, former United States Congressman and Ambassador, as the next U.S. Ambassador to Canada. With extensive experience in both U.S. politics and international diplomacy, Hoekstra’s nomination aims to further strengthen U.S. interests in North America.

“I am very pleased to announce that former Ambassador, and former Congressman, Pete Hoekstra, has been nominated as my United States Ambassador to Canada,” Trump said in a statement. The president-elect praised Hoekstra’s deep ties to Michigan, where he served nearly 20 years in Congress, including as Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

Hoekstra’s nomination follows a distinguished career, including his role as U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands during Trump’s first term. Trump highlighted that Hoekstra’s work in that role played a crucial part in promoting U.S. interests internationally. “He did an outstanding job as United States Ambassador to the Netherlands during our first four years, and I am confident that he will continue to represent our country well in this new role,” Trump said.

A former Michigan Republican, Hoekstra was a vocal supporter of the Trump campaign, and his leadership as Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party was credited with strengthening the state’s Republican efforts. Trump’s statement also highlighted Hoekstra’s role in advancing the administration’s “America First” agenda, particularly in trade. “In my second term, Pete will help me once again put AMERICA FIRST,” Trump said, reinforcing his commitment to prioritizing American interests.

In a post on X, Hoekstra said, “Honored for the opportunity to serve. Thank you, Mr. President!”

Hoekstra’s nomination aims to strengthen the U.S.-Canada relationship, particularly in trade and diplomacy. His experience in both Congress and as a diplomat aligns with Trump’s broader goals of advancing U.S. priorities in North America.

The nomination now heads to the Senate for confirmation. If approved, Hoekstra will continue his efforts to strengthen ties between the U.S. and Canada while prioritizing American interests globally.
