Op-Ed by Rafael Salamanca Jr.: A Commitment to the Bronx’s African Community—And a Vision to Lead Our Borough Forward
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

I’m proud to have spent my life in the Bronx—serving it, raising my family in it, and fighting to make sure no neighborhood gets left behind. As a City Council Member and Chair of the Land Use Committee, I’ve delivered on the basics: building thousands of affordable homes, bringing in over $400 million in capital investments, and expanding access to jobs and services in communities that have long been overlooked.

Now, I’m running to be your next Bronx Borough President—because I believe it’s time to manage what’s been mismanaged and move the Bronx forward with urgency, vision, and equity.

That starts with recognizing the rich diversity of our borough—and uplifting the people and cultures that make the Bronx a place of hope and opportunity. I’ve been deeply moved by the growth and contributions of the African community here in the Bronx. From entrepreneurship to faith, from music to cuisine, your presence has strengthened the social and economic fabric of this borough. It’s time our borough formally recognized that.

As Borough President, I will work to establish a Cultural Zone recognizing Little Africa in the Bronx—a place that honors African heritage, celebrates the businesses and institutions rooted in the community, and creates a destination for future investment and pride.

I will also fight to protect immigrant rights, expand language access, and ensure that all residents—no matter where they’re from or what language they speak—have access to city services, legal assistance, housing support, and small business resources. The Bronx is stronger when everyone has a seat at the table, and I will make sure City Hall hears your voice.

Beyond that, my platform is focused on results. We’ll invest in:

  • Public safety that protects everyone—with better lighting, more youth programs, and a real plan to stop the violence.
  • Cleaner streets and stronger services—including more parks funding, improved sanitation, and responsive city agencies.
  • Better schools and job opportunities—because the future of the Bronx depends on how we educate and employ our young people.

But no plan matters if it doesn’t include you. My leadership style is rooted in listening, respect, and action. I’ll continue showing up, not just during election season, but every day—as a partner, an advocate, and a proud Bronxite ready to get to work.

I humbly ask for your support and your vote on June 24 for Bronx Borough President. Together, let’s build a borough where every community is seen, supported, and empowered to thrive.
