Moulana Mustaqeem Wanza, a respected Muslim cleric, was shot and killed outside the Salaamudien Masjid in Lentegeur, Mitchells Plain, a suburb of Cape Town, on Wednesday night, the first evening of Ramadan. The 33-year-old had just finished leading Taraweeh prayers and was reportedly on his way to a colleague’s home when he was attacked.

According to witnesses and community statements, a white Volkswagen Polo pulled up, and the assailants fired multiple rounds, striking Wanza eight times. He was declared dead at the scene. Two other individuals present at the time were unharmed.

Police confirmed they received a report of the shooting at approximately 22:55 on February 18th. A spokesperson stated, “The motive for the shooting is yet to be determined,” and noted that investigations remain ongoing. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS mobile application.

The Darul Ulama Association described Wanza as a respected “Alum whose melodious voice resounded in Masaajieds throughout the Western Cape and beyond.” They emphasized that he “was an inspiration for many of our youth to pursue the path of the Qur’an.”

The mosque committee expressed shock at the incident and urged calm, calling on residents to “refrain from speculation” while authorities conduct a full investigation. Aswaatul Islam also reflected on Wanza’s influence, describing him as “a deeply respected soul” whose guidance touched many lives.

Lentegeur Community Policing Forum Chairperson Michael Jacobs condemned the killing and appealed to the public to assist authorities. “The Moulana was a leader within the community and a role model to young people of faith,” he remarked, urging cooperation in the investigation.
