A man aged 46, named Muslim Brunson, has been taken into custody and charged after carrying out two random assaults in the SoHo area of Manhattan. Police have reported that Brunson, who is without a home and has a lengthy criminal record, attacked two women with a glass bottle on April 7, 2025. This event happened in daylight hours, resulting in one woman suffering severe injuries after being cut on the neck. The second woman escaped without any physical injury.

The New York Police Department indicated that the attacks took place around 3 p. m. on Broome Street. Brunson first hit a 29-year-old woman in the back with the bottle. Shortly after, he is accused of using the broken glass to slash a 25-year-old woman across the neck. The second victim, identified later as a costume designer named Megan Berg, was taken to Bellevue Hospital for emergency surgery. The NYPD confirmed that despite being in critical condition, she was conscious and alert after the procedure on the day of the incident.

Brunson is now facing several charges, such as attempted murder in the second degree, second-degree assault, and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Law enforcement officials noted that Brunson has an alarming history of violent offenses coupled with ongoing mental health issues. In 2022, he attacked a female member of the NYPD, leading to serious facial injuries, and he was involved in a robbery in 2019 that targeted a 13-year-old boy. Previously, Brunson had participated in a mental health program mandated by the court but was released in 2023. The New York State Unified Court System oversees programs designed to provide alternatives to incarceration.

This incident has reignited debate about the effectiveness of mental health diversion programs and their implications for community safety. Authorities mentioned that Brunson has undergone 36 mental health hearings and has been arrested multiple times in the last six years. Sources within law enforcement highlighted the repeated shortcomings of the system in retaining or properly supervising individuals prone to violence. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has consistently advocated for changes in how mental health issues and criminal behavior are dealt with in cities.

Residents of the SoHo community, known for its upscale environment, voiced worries about safety and called for stronger actions against habitual offenders. The NYPD caught Brunson near the attack site shortly after the events unfolded. Officials have stated that the investigation is ongoing and that they are examining surveillance videos and additional evidence. Crime statistics from the NYPD continue to show incidents involving individuals with emotional disturbances throughout the city’s boroughs.
