In a rare cross-party move, former Democratic Assemblyman Jamel Holley has announced his support for Republican Jack Ciattarelli in the upcoming New Jersey gubernatorial election. The endorsement was made public via a social media post on Sunday, June 29th.

Holley, who served in the state legislature from 2015 to 2022 and previously as mayor of Roselle, called Ciattarelli “the right way forward for New Jersey.” He emphasized unity and progress in a follow-up statement, expressing opposition to divisive political discourse and reiterating his commitment to inclusive governance.

Known for his bipartisan approach during his time in office, Holley often collaborated with Republicans on criminal justice reform and economic initiatives. He has also been an outspoken critic of vaccine mandates and maintains a close relationship with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., serving as both a friend and advisor.

Holley’s endorsement is Ciattarelli’s first from a Democratic figure. The Republican candidate, a former 16th District assemblyman, is also backed by President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, Democratic candidate Mikie Sherrill received support from former Republican Governor Christine Todd Whitman, further highlighting the unusual political alliances emerging in this election cycle.

Union endorsements continue to shape the race following the June 10 primary. Ciattarelli secured backing from the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825, a group that had supported Democratic Governor Phil Murphy in past elections. Sherrill has the endorsement of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees New Jersey Council 63.

With the general election scheduled for November 4, both campaigns are ramping up efforts in what is expected to be a closely contested race.
