Trump Nominates Pam Bondi as Attorney General Following Gaetz Withdrawal

On Thursday, November 21st, President-elect Donald Trump named Pam Bondi, a longtime ally and former Florida Attorney General, his nominee to lead the Department of Justice (DOJ). Bondi’s nomination follows the withdrawal of Florida Representative Matt Gaetz, whose past allegations hindered his confirmation prospects.

Trump expressed support for Bondi, saying,  “For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans – Not anymore. Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again. I have known Pam for many years — She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!”

Bondi served as Florida’s Attorney General from 2011 to 2019, where she became known for her efforts to combat drug trafficking and address the opioid crisis, particularly the devastating impact of fentanyl overdose deaths. Trump highlighted her work as Florida’s first female Attorney General, specifically in efforts to curb the trafficking of deadly drugs and reduce the tragic toll of opioid-related deaths, which have affected families across the nation.

Bondi’s nomination follows the sudden withdrawal of Gaetz, who had been Trump’s initial pick for Attorney General. Gaetz stepped aside amid concerns over a sex trafficking investigation, which raised doubts about his ability to be confirmed. Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing, but the allegations complicated his path to confirmation.

For his second Attorney General pick, Trump has again turned to a loyal ally with a history of support. Bondi was a senior adviser on Trump’s first impeachment defense team, taking a leave of absence from Ballard Partners, a lobbying firm where she later rejoined. She was also among the Republicans who supported Trump during his New York hush money criminal trial, which ended in May with a conviction on 34 felony counts. Bondi’s strong ties to Trump and her history of defending his policies further solidify her as a key figure in his administration.

Bondi’s nomination has earned support from Senate Republicans, including Sen. Lindsey Graham, who described her as a ‘slam dunk’ and predicted a swift confirmation. “She will be confirmed quickly because she deserves to be confirmed quickly,” Graham wrote on X.

If confirmed, she would take the helm of the DOJ at a time when the department is expected to navigate significant political challenges and controversies.
