Mamdani’s Allies Plan Primary Challenges Against NYC Democrats

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries

Progressive activists in New York City are exploring primary challenges against several Democratic members of Congress following Zohran Mamdani’s strong showing in the recent mayoral primary.

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and allied groups are reportedly considering targeting five incumbents, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Jeffries, who has downplayed past threats from the left, responded by branding potential challengers as “Team Gentrification,” signaling his criticism of their political base and perceived disconnect from working-class communities.

Representatives Ritchie Torres, Jerry Nadler, Dan Goldman, and Yvette Clarke have also been identified as potential targets. DSA leaders argue that Mamdani’s rise from grassroots organizer in Brooklyn to competitive mayoral contender shows that progressive challengers can succeed. “It’s really proof of concept,” said Ashik Siddique, a national DSA co-chair.

Jasmine Gripper of the Working Families Party echoed that sentiment, suggesting some Democratic incumbents may now face real vulnerability. Preliminary vote counts showed Mamdani and ally City Comptroller Brad Lander outperforming former Governor Andrew Cuomo in multiple districts.

Jeffries remains defiant. In a CNN interview, he reaffirmed his focus on combating political extremism and dismissed the primary threats. Meanwhile, Nadler, who endorsed Mamdani, has begun adjusting campaign strategy in areas where support for the mayoral candidate was weak.

No challengers have formally announced their campaigns, but talks are underway. Jeffries’ adviser André Richardson warned that any primary challenge would be met with a “forceful and unrelenting” response.
